PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a discharge lamp lighting device made to be stably lit without light going out in a lamp with unstable arc discharge retaining after start-up, as well as hardly supplying excessive electric power in a lamp without a lot of lamp power required immediately after start-up. SOLUTION: The device includes an output power characteristic curve for supplying constant power to a rated lamp voltage range of a high-pressure discharge lamp, as well as a plurality of output power characteristic curves W1, W2, W3 to lamp voltage in the rated lamp voltage range. After a start-up of the high-pressure discharge lamp, when lamp power is supplied to the high-pressure discharge lamp based on the output power characteristic curve of an initial setting, a minimum lamp voltage detection means for detecting a minimum lamp voltage after arc discharge transition is provided. In a predetermined minimum lamp voltage range, as the minimum lamp voltage detected by the minimum lamp voltage detection means gets larger, a large output power characteristic curve from the plurality of the output power characteristic curves W1, W2, W3 is reset, then the subsequent power control is carried out.
