The method involves detecting on-coming vehicles or vehicles driving ahead. The headlight of the vehicle located in the center lane is lowered with regard to the illumination characteristics. The positions of vehicles driving ahead or on-coming vehicles are tracked by a system in combination with automatic high beam switching or optical headlight-range control e.g. on the basis of a camera or also in combination with other assistance system having different sensor technology.
