A backlight unit and a liquid crystal display device using the same are provided to form dummy paths through dummy path circuits even if multiple light emitting diodes have defects for preventing a light emitting diode array from being opened, thereby minimizing brightness drop resulting from the defects of the light emitting diodes. A backlight unit comprises a light emitting diode array(120) including multiple light emitting diodes, and multiple dummy path circuits(122). The light emitting diodes emit lights by the current inputted from serial connection. The dummy path circuits form the dummy current paths of the defective light emitting diodes. The dummy path circuits are connected in parallel with the light emitting diodes. The dummy path circuits include transistors connected between anode and cathode electrodes, and Zenor diodes connected between the anode electrode of the light emitting diode and a gate electrode of the transistor. |
