An apparatus and a method for controlling viewing conditions by channel in an image display device are provided to enable a user to view each channel according to set viewing environment during channel change if the user sets the viewing environment once according to channel. A user interface(60) is for receiving user request commands such as channel switching and viewing conditions setup by channel. A memory(70) stores viewing environment data by channel set through the user interface. A controller(80) extracts viewing environment data of a corresponding channel from the memory according to whether a user viewing environment mode is set if a channel change command is inputted through the user interface, and performs video and sound processing according to the extracted viewing environment data. A signal processor(40) corrects video and sound signals according to a control signal of the controller.
