<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time for attaining a set temperature after water supply from a hot water supplying terminal in a flash water heating heat pump type water heater. <P>SOLUTION: This water heater comprises heat pump cycles 10 and 20 including low-pressure shell type compressor 11 and 21, a flow sensor 30A that is a water supply detection means for detecting the water supply from the hot water supplying terminal such as a faucet 39, and a control means 82 for controlling the compressors 11 and 21 on receipt of a signal from the flow sensor 30A. According to this, since the temperature of a shell with a large weight ratio of the compressors 11 and 21 is not raised with a low pressure, the build up of the discharge refrigerant temperature from the compressors 11 and 21 can be speeded up after starting the compressors 11 and 21 to hasten the build up of heating capability of the heat pump cycles 10 and 20.
