Class 53 A separator for a storage battery is made by mixing bentonite, silica gel or other colloidal substance with water and allowing it to stand till the colloid becomes swollen, mixing it in this condition with a plastic binder for example a solution or dispersion of polyvinyl chloride or phenol formaldehyde resin, spreading the mixture on a fibrous carrier and drying and moulding to shape. The carrier may comprise a web of carded glass wool, asbestos, synthetic resin or other woven material, and the final product may be ribbed, corrugated or otherwise formed with projections. |
