A portable information terminal for a vehicle and a method for controlling the same are provided to enlarge a display area of control menus to operate the control menus easily when the vehicle moves, thereby reducing accidents. Traveling speed of a vehicle is measured to judge whether the traveling speed of the vehicle is faster than predetermined speed. If so, a control unit(270) displays an expanded control menu relatively larger than a normal control menu. If the traveling speed of the vehicle is slower than the predetermined speed, the control unit displays the normal control menu. An image processor(250) generates image data based on inputted image signals. An image synthesizer(254) synthesizes image data of the image processor and the expanded control menu to output the synthesized image data and expanded control menu to the display.
