PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for quantizing pixel values of images, and more specifically for conducting appropriate random processing for the same. SOLUTION: The method for processing the images includes steps of computing error values caused by quantizing each of a plurality of the pixels of the images when quantizing the pixel values of the images; making the error values resulting from the quantization correspond to the differences between the quantized values generated after the pixels are quantized and the original values given before the pixels are quantized; and adjusting a plurality of the adjacent pixels to the original values given before the pixels are quantized by utilizing the quantized error values, a plurality of weight values, and a plurality of random numbers. Additionally, the plurality of weight values corresponds to relative positions of the pixels to which the plurality of adjacent pixels correspond. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
