PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To regenerate the catalytic activity of a used ester exchange reaction catalyst. SOLUTION: A method for regenerating the ester exchange reaction catalyst comprises the steps of: preparing the used ester exchange reaction catalyst containing alkali metal salt; dissolving the prepared used catalyst in water to obtain an aqueous solution; adding metal hydroxide to the obtained aqueous solution to adjust the pH so that the pH of the obtained aqueous solution becomes within±20% of the pH of another aqueous solution prepared by dissolving an unused catalyst of the same amount as that of the used catalyst in the water of the same amount as that of the water used when the used catalyst is dissolved; and separating the regenerated catalyst as solid content.
