A method for the production of detergent base products involves (a) forming an intermediate bis-Mannich compound by reacting (i) hydroxy-aromatic compound(s) ring-substituted with an aliphatic hydrocarbyl group derived from a polyolefin with a number-average molecular weight (Mn) of 500-3000 with (ii) prim. amine(s) and (iii) aldehyde(s) and (b) reacting the intermediate with prim. and/or sec. amine(s).
