PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately diagnose the abnormality of the chain of an existing escalator in a short time. SOLUTION: An accelerator sensor 101 is installed on one handrail 1 and outputs an acceleration signal 201a provided when the direction of the operation when the operation is started is reverse to the direction of the operation immediately before the stop state. A start delay time detection means 102 calculates a start delay time 203a according to the acceleration signal 201a. A determination means 103 compares the start delay time 203a with a preset threshold to determine the abnormality of a chain. A portion specifying means 104 compares the start delay time 203a with a preset threshold, and compares the start delay time 204a provided when the direction of the operation provided by a chain abnormality diagnostic device installed on the handrail 1 on the opposite side is reverse to the direction of the operation immediately before the stop state with a preset threshold to specify the portion at which the abnormality of the chain occurs.
