PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an agent for increasing the polyphenol content in a plant. SOLUTION: The agent for increasing the polyphenol content in a plant contains 5-aminolevulinic acid of formula (1): R<SP>2</SP>R<SP>1</SP>NCH<SB>2</SB>COCH<SB>2</SB>CH<SB>2</SB>COR<SP>3</SP>(wherein R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each independently a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an acyl group, an alkoxycarbonyl group, an aryl group or an aralkyl group; and R<SP>3</SP>is a hydroxy group, an alkoxy group which may have a substituent, an acyloxy group, an alkoxycarbonyloxy group, an aryloxy group, an aralkyloxy group or an amino group), a derivative thereof or a salt thereof as an active ingredient.
