A display device and a method for controlling the same are provided to display frames at a regular brightness level, without a loss of contrast ratio, by exactly confirming whether an inputted video signal contains 7.5 IRE(Institute of Radio Engineers). A display device comprises a signal input part(10), a signal processing part(20), and a control part(40). A video signal is inputted through the signal input part(10). The signal processing part(20) processes the video signal, inputted through the signal input part(10), according to a preset offset value. The control part(40) compares the output black level of the video signal, processed by the signal processing part(20), with a reference black level. In case the output black level of the video signal is not identical to the reference black level, the control part(40) corrects the preset offset value of the signal processing part(20) so that the output black level can get identical to the reference black level.
