PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light emitting element capable of improving light extraction efficiency by sticking an optical thin film to a luminescent layer at an atomic level, and inexpensively manufacturable as compared with a structure composed by machining an interfacial surface between elements into an uneven structure. SOLUTION: This light emitting element has the optical thin film on the light extraction surface side of the luminescent layer. The optical thin film has a columnar void vertical to the light extraction surface. Each of the optical thin film and the luminescent layer contains, as constituent elements, one or more elements selected from Si and Ge, and oxygen, and the one or more elements selected from Si and Ge of the optical thin film is/are the same as the one or more elements of the luminescent layer.
