DISPLAY DEVICE AND METHOD OF ADJUSTING BRIGHTNESS FOR THE SAME

A display device and a method of adjusting the brightness of the same are provided to adjust a representative value applied for adjusting the brightness of each partial area so as to compensate an increase and a decrease in the brightness by reaction with an adjacent partial area generated by the brightness adjustment of a backlight for the each partial area, thereby improving effectively a contrast ratio. A display device comprises a light emitting unit(210), a driving unit(220), and a control unit(230). The light emitting unit is divided into a predetermined number of partial areas. The brightness of the light emitting unit is adjusted by each partial area. The driving unit is connected to the light emitting unit to adjust the brightness of the each partial area. The control unit calculates a representative value applied to the brightness adjustment of the each partial area of the light emitting unit in correspondence to an input image signal, and compensates the representative value with a contrast enhancement method to output the representative value to the driving unit.
