The apparatus consists of a hollow shell (1) with three branches (3, 4, 5) in a T- or Y-shaped configuration and an inner cavity (2) connected to the lungs of a cardiac arrest victim. The shell is fitted with two normally-closed valves; one valve (9) is designed to open spontaeously to connect the cavity with the outside atmosphere when there is a pressure inside the cavity and act as a brake on the gas flow when it is open. The second valve (7) is designed to open spontaneouly when there is a depression in the shell cavity to deliver a flow of a breathable gas such as external air or oxygen from a bottle or pouch to the patient's lungs. |
