A writing instrument (10) includes a travel multiplier mechanism (12) that includes a cam member (16) that pivots about a pivot axis in response to motion of a push button member (14). The cam member engages a sliding piston member (22) in order to provide a travel multiplying effect such that a distance of travel of the sliding piston member exceeds a distance traveled by the push button member. The cam member (16) may be configured to rotate about an axis that is located in a plane perpendicular to a primary axis of a barrel of the writing instrument.
