PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrially advantageous method for the production of a halogen-substituted benzenedimethanol. SOLUTION: The method for the production of a halogen-substituted benzenedimethanol comprises reducing a halogen-substituted terephthalic acid diester represented by the formula (1) (R<SP>1</SP>and R<SP>2</SP>are each the same or different and an alkyl group which may be substituted; X<SP>1</SP>-X<SP>4</SP>are each the same or different and a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom) in the presence of an ether solvent by using a metal borohydride. An acid is used in an amount of 0.2 to 3 mols in terms of protons per mol of the metal borohydride. The reduction is conducted under the condition where the liquid phase of the reaction mixture is a single phase or a two-phase mixture composed of a solid phase and a homogeneous liquid phase.
