PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for thermally assisted magnetic recording which heats a magnetic recording medium locally and efficiently without using a head requiring a large burden for a manufacturing process. SOLUTION: The method for thermally assisted magnetic recording writes a data signal in the magnetic recording medium by applying a high frequency magnetic field to a part of a magnetic recording layer included in the magnetic recording medium or the vicinity of the part to generate an eddy current to heat the part to lower the coercive force at the part temporarily, and thereafter applying a writing magnetic field to at least a part of the part.
