PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium satisfying running durability and having effective corrosion resistance in a long term preservation even if the thickness of a protective layer is thin. SOLUTION: In the magnetic recording medium 100 of a metal thin film type having a magnetic layer 2, a protective layer 3 mainly made of carbon and a lubricant layer 4 comprising a lubricant having a polar group on a non-magnetic supporting body 1, the protective layer 3 contains 0.5 to 50 at% metal.
