A safety system at a platform and a method for controlling the same are provided to accurately calculate the position of a passenger in a dangerous area by longitudinally separating the dangerous area into a plurality of areas at regular intervals. A safety system at a platform includes a first detecting unit(20), a main control unit(50), and an alarm signal output device. The first detecting unit detects the approaching of a passenger by monitoring a dangerous area of the platform separated into a plurality of platform areas. The main control unit detects the position of the passenger in the dangerous area by analyzing data detected by the first detecting unit. The alarm signal output device selectively outputs an alarm signal at only the position of the passenger in the dangerous area. The first detecting unit includes a first detecting sensor and a second detecting sensor. The first detecting sensor detects a lower body of the passenger by receiving laser beam emitted from one side of the platform. The second detecting sensor detects an upper body of the passenger by receiving the laser beam emitted from one side of the platform.
