ULTRA THIN SURFACE LIGHT SOURCE WITH HOLLOW SPACER AND BACKLIGHT UNIT HAVING THE SAME

An ultra-thin surface light source including a hollow spacer and a backlight unit having the same are provided to improve brightness of a display device by enabling an inner space of a spacer to contribute to a light emitting process. An ultra-thin surface light source is used as a backlight unit and includes a first substrate(210), a second substrate(220), and plural hollow spacers(215). The second substrate is arranged to be opposed to the first substrate. The first and second substrates are apart from each other by a constant distance. The hollow spacers are arranged between the first and second substrates. The hollow spacer is attached to a surface of at least one of the first and second substrates. A fluorescent material is applied on inner and outer surfaces of the hollow spacer. The hollow spacer is attached to the first or second substrate using a glass frit(216).
