The apparatus has a target-value setting section setting a target rotational-speed difference between input and output rotational speeds of two clutches. An engagement control section controls engagement states of clutches based on the torque capacities calculated by an individual torque-capacity calculating section. A total torque-capacity calculating section calculates a total torque capacity necessary for two clutches to bring an actual rotational-speed difference between the input and output rotational speed of the clutches. An independent claim is also included for a control method for an automatic transmission.
