A vacuum cleaner is provided to increase dust collecting capacity by automatically pressing dust stored within a dust collecting apparatus, and to prevent performance deterioration of the vacuum cleaner due to excessive dust suction by controlling the operation of a suction motor. A vacuum cleaner comprises a cleaner body, a dust collecting device(200), at least one pressure member(270,280), a power transfer member(410), a magnetic member, a magnetism sensing part, and a control unit. The cleaner body is provided with a dust collecting apparatus mounting part. The dust collecting apparatus is detachable from the dust collecting apparatus mounting part, having a dust storage part therein. The at least one pressure member is movably mounted within the dust storage part to reduce the volume of dust stored in the dust storage part. The power transmission unit as a gear is in connection with the pressure member to transfer external driving force to the pressure member, and is provided with the magnetic member. The magnetism sensing part senses magnetism of the magnetic member. The control unit judges the amount of stored dust inside the dust storage part depending on the magnetism sensed by the magnetism sensing part.
