Disclosed are: a composition useful for the detoxification of a toxic compound containing arsenic or the like efficiently and systematically; and a method for the detoxification of a toxic compound using the composition. Specifically, disclosed are: a composition for alkylation, comprising a cobalt complex; and a detoxification method characterized in that a toxic compound containing at least one element selected from the group consisting of arsenic, antimony and selenium is alkylated in the presence of the composition to thereby detoxify the toxic compound.
