Methods for treating and preventing mucositis, in particular mucositis fo llowing the administration of chemotherapy drugs or a combination of said dr ugs with radiotherapy, are disclosed herein. More specifically, disclosed he rein is the administration of a therapeutically effective amount of at least one of an anthocyanoside, a proanthocyanidin, or an extract containing at l east one of an anthocyanoside or a proanthocyanidin for the treatment or pre vention of mucositis. The therapeutically effective amount of the anthocyano side, proanthocyanidin or extract can be administered alone or in combinatio n with a therapeutically effective amount of at least one of an anti-inflamm atory agent, immunomodulating agent, analgesic, antimicrobial agent or antif ungal agent. Also disclosed herein are pharmaceutical compositions for treat ing and preventing mucositis.
