<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a video analysis technology for more efficiently managing and handling video contents. <P>SOLUTION: An image processing apparatus disclosed herein determines a target shot to be any of existing types such as "Long", "Medium", "Close-up", "Out" (steps S53, S57, S58, S61) on the basis of discrimination as to: whether or not the target shot includes a region of interest (step S52); whether or not characteristics based on projection characteristic amounts Ph, PV are the "Close-up" type or the "Medium" type (step S55); whether or not characteristics based on projection characteristic amounts Ph1, PV1 are the "Medium" type (step S60); and whether or not object characteristics are the "Close-up" type (S56).
