PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electroluminescent element capable of preventing degradation of an electron injection layer, with excellent life characteristics, and capable of effectively making a moisture absorption material act thereon. SOLUTION: The organic electroluminescent element is covered with a sealing member. The electron injection layer contains an alkali metal, an alkali metal compound, alkaline earth metal, or an alkaline earth metal compound. A moisture absorbing material with higher or equivalent moisture-absorption characteristics than or with the alkali metal, alkali metal compound, alkaline earth metal, or the alkaline earth metal compound contained in the electron injection layer is provided inside the sealing member.
