摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine having further high efficiency and further saving on energy by supplying a part of a high-temperature and high-pressure gas in an expansion stroke of a cylinder to another cylinder and expanding it. SOLUTION: In the internal combustion engine, connecting apertures are formed on boundary wall surfaces of cylinders adjacent to each other, different in phase, and different in level in the vertical direction. The phase difference is 12°, and the level difference is 7°. The cylinder capacity thereof is 34%. The compression ratio of the supply-side cylinder and that of the reception-side cylinder are 11 and 17.5, respectively. In a normal operation, stratified combustion is carried out in a compression stroke of a supply cylinder, and super-thin combustion is carried out by supplying a super-thin air-fuel mixture to a reception cylinder. In a power operation, a fuel is jetted to intake strokes of both the cylinders to carry out homogeneous combustion. In the supply cylinder, a plug is ignited in the vicinity of BTDC 5°, and a pressurized gas after combustion at ATDC 7°is supplied to the reception cylinder. The air-fuel mixture on the reception side is compressed and ignited. The substantial compression ratio of the two cylinders is between 11 and 17.5. Since the reception side is subjected to compression ignition, high-efficiency operation is executed by super-thin combustion. By reducing the cylinder capacity of the supply-side cylinder to increase the cylinder capacity ratio of both the cylinders nearly to a knocking limit, the substantial compression ratio of both the cylinders is brought close to 17.5 to increase fuel efficiency.
