PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problem in a configuration wherein a single-phase alternating-current power supply, a full-wave rectification circuit composed of diodes, a reactor, a capacitor series circuit, bidirectional switches, and a load are connected: when the power factor of an input alternating current is enhanced by switching the bidirectional switches, the voltages of the capacitors connected in series are imbalanced during a half-cycle period. SOLUTION: A reactor is connected between a single-phase AC power supply and one AC input of a full-wave rectification circuit composed of diodes. A capacitor series circuit is connected between the DC outputs of the full-wave rectification circuit. Bidirectional switches 10, 11 are connected between the internal junction points of the capacitor series circuit and the individual AC inputs of the full-wave rectification circuit. A load 14 is connected in parallel with the capacitor series circuit. The voltages of the capacitor 12 and the capacitor 13 connected in series are detected, and the turn-on/off of the bidirectional switches 10 and 11 is controlled at a high frequency so that these voltages are equalized.
