A telephone system architecture enabling components of a telephone system (100) to be distributed geographically yet operates as a seamlessly integrated system. A signaling gateway function interfaces (120) to the PSTN (110) and through an SS7 interface. In addition, one or more media servers (130) interface with a signaling gateway function (120) as well as the PSTN (110). The interface of the media servers (130) with the PSTN (110) is of purposes of receiving and initiating telephone calls or other communications. The telephone system (100) can include a variety of other elements, such as one or more system management units (140), one or more application servers (150) and one or more central data and message store systems (160). Each of the components in the telephonic system (100) communicates with each other over an internet protocol type network. Any functions in the various components that require an SS7 interface to the PSTN (110) are simply handled through the signaling gateway function (120).
