PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To simultaneously improve light extraction efficiency and contrast of an organic electroluminescent element. SOLUTION: The electroluminescent element comprises an organic light emitting layer 15, a positive electrode for injecting a positive hole in the organic light emitting layer 15 and a negative electrode 14, 16 for injecting an electron, and a sealing part 17 for protecting an entire element from an external environment. The sealing part 17 is transparent, and the negative electrode and positive electrode are substantially transparent electrodes. A conductive absorption electrode 12 formed of one or more layers for absorbing reflected light, and a scattering layer 13 in which scattering intensity of light is varied by an applied voltage are formed in this order from the substrate 11 side between the negative electrode or the positive electrode and the substrate. The scattering layer 13 substantially lose scattering in a state that the organic light emitting layer 15 does not emit light, and the scattering layer 13 has a scattering property in a state that the organic light emitting layer emits light.
