A work device used for fixing a work to the table and the work pallet of a machine tool, wherein even when a soft jaw longer in a work holding direction is mounted thereon, the work can be prevented from being raised by a holding force. A downwardly moving mechanism allowing a mouthpiece to slightly move downward when the work is held is mounted at the tip part of the feeding device of a movable carriage. Desirably, the feeding device is mounted in a base, and the downwardly moving mechanism is mounted at the fixed mouthpiece side end part of the movable carriage to reduce the upwardly moving amount of the work holding end of the feeding device of the movable carriage by the tilt movement of the movable carriage even when the long soft jaw is mounted. Namely, the work device comprises a pair of sawtooth-shaped members (8) and (9) having a downwardly tilted sliding surface (31) and an upwardly tilted sliding surface (32) brought into contact with each other. A movable mouthpiece (16) is energized downward by a wedge action between the downwardly tilted sliding surface (31) and the upwardly tilted sliding surface (32) in holding the work to prevent the work from being raised. The pair of sawtooth-shaped members (8) and (9) are fitted to the fixed mouthpiece side end part of the feeding device of the movable carriage (4).
