PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the burden on a vehicle driver when running the vehicle backward, which is parked facing ahead in a parking position. SOLUTION: When an assist start switch 3 is turned on in such a state that the vehicle concerned is parked facing ahead in a parking frame, a control unit 2 computes the space information about its surrounding area (the photographing ranges of cameras 4-6 and the sensing range of a bunch 7 of obstacle sensors) on the basis of the result from image processing of image signals given by the cameras 4-6 and sensor signals given by the sensor bunch 7, calculates the retreating method including the vehicle turning direction in running backward by making reference to the spatial information, the running loci stored previously up to the parking frame, and the dimensional information about the vehicle dimensions stored in a car navigation system 12, and gives notification about the retreating method through a monitor 13 and a speaker 14.
