PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating material for automobiles containing a viscosity improver that can give outstanding finished properties (smoothness, clarity, sag resistance). SOLUTION: The viscosity improver comprises a copolymer comprising (meta) acrylic acid (salt) (a), a monomer (b) expressed by the formula, wherein R<SP>1</SP>is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are a hydrogen atom, a methyl or ethy group, R<SP>4</SP>is an 8-24C alkyl group, n is 3-60, an alkyl (meta) acrylate (c) having a 1-4C alkyl group, and a multifunctional monomer (d) as essential constituent monomers, wherein the content of the unit a is 0.1-50 wt.%, that of the unit b is 5-60 wt.%, that of the unit c is 5-60 wt.%, and that of the unit d is 0.05-5 wt.%, based on the total weight of the monomer units a-d.
