PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engraving material and an original plate for engraving that are excellent in cutting property and can be carved without using a cutting tool such as a carving knife, and easily and safely carved for fun not only by beginners but high school or elementary school students and even preschool children. SOLUTION: A engraving material 3 constituting an original plate 1 for engraving essentially comprises a matrix resin and a plasticizer or the like and has a surface strength that allows carving with a pencil of 3B hardness or lower. Thereby, the engraving material 3 is softer than a conventional soft original plate for engraving such as a rubber plate, and excellent in cutting property and can be easily carved with a tool having a relatively sharp top such as a bamboo spatula, toothpick, pencil and mechanical pencil without using a hard, sharp and highly dangerous dedicated cutting tool such as a carving knife and a cutter.
