<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form desired gradation images with controlling productivity and running costs for an output device. <P>SOLUTION: A PC which is connected to a printer so as to bidirectionally communicate compares the latest color gradation characteristics acquired from the printer with standard gradation characteristics in its initial state to determine whether or not printer setup is required. Subsequently, the PC calculates a continuously variable gradation range of image data, and then determines whether or not the gradation characteristics satisfy specified conditions within the gradation range and a smooth gradation image can be formed (steps 100 to 116). If it is determined that the gradation characteristics satisfy the conditions and a smooth gradation image can be formed, image data, the data of which is converted based on the gradation characteristics and the standard gradation characteristics, is transmitted and image formation is performed (steps 118 and 120).
