Unsaturated hydrocarbons are hydrogenated in the presence of catalysts containing copper and zinc, the active mass of which, in unreduced form, essentially consists of 10 to 95% by weight copper oxide, calculated as copper(ll) oxide (CuO), 5 to 90% by weight zinc oxide (ZnO), optionally 0.1 to 50% by weight zirconium dioxide (ZrO₂) and also optionally 0.1% by weight to 50% by weight AI₂O₃, wherein the weight fractions total 100% by weight.
