Coating compositions and production of coatings therefrom

A coating composition comprises a liquid polymer or copolymer of a conjugated diene and 1 to 30 parts by weight per 100 parts of total non-volatile constituents of an oil-modified resin. The resin is preferably added in solution in a solvent such as toluene, xylene, benzene, Stoddard solvent or heptane. The composition may be applied to metal in the preparation of coated metal food containers by brushing, dipping, spraying and roller coating followed by a treatment at 65-600 DEG F. Driers such as linoleates or naphthenates of lead, cobalt or manganese may be added. The liquid polymer may be a polymer of a diene such as butadiene, 2,3 dimethyl-1,3 butadiene, isoprene or piperylene, or a copolymer of such a diene with styrene or methyl styrene. The alkyd resins may be prepared by the reaction of polyhydric alcohols with polycarboxylic acids modified by a vegetable oil. The polyhydric alcohols will generally contain not more than 15 carbon atoms and may be ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, alpha-butylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, hexamethyleneglycol, diphenyl propane diol, glycerol, erythritol, penta erythritol, rabitol, sorbitol, allitol, inositol and scyllitol. Monohydroxy alcohols such as methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, sec. butyl, tert, butyl, isoamyl, octyl, myristyl, benzyl and furfuryl alcohols and cyclohexanol may be added in an amount not exceeding 5 per cent of the total alcohol. The polycarboxylic acids may be the following: maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, mesaconic, ethylmaleic, methylethylmaleic, diethylmaleic, glutaconic, alpha-methyl glutaconic, alpha, alpha1-dimethyl glutaconic, beta-methyl glutaconic, alpha alpha-dimethyl glutaconic, alpha, beta, gamma, tributylglutaconic, 1,2-dihydromuconic, 2-octenedioic, 2 heptenedioic, 2-pentadecene-dioic, phthalic, terephthalic, mellitic, succinic, adipic, azelaic, sebacic, itaconic, citraconic and maleic acids. Monocarboxylic acids in an amount up to 5 per cent of the total acids may also be employed and the acids may be replaced wholly or in part by the corresponding anhydrides. The vegetable oils may be coconut, soybean, linseed, dehydrated castor, tung, perilla, oiticaca, sunflower, safflower walnut or chinawood oils.
