Protrusions extend at right angles to the surface of the device and the height and diameter of these protrusions and the gaps in between them are chosen in order to create capillary flow of a liquid in a lateral direction relative to this surface. The device includes at least one zone for receiving a sample, at least one liquid holding portion exerting at least two different capillary forces on the liquid, at least two flow paths connecting the receiving zone with the holding portion and exerting at least two different capillary forces on the liquid, and at least one connection between the flow paths. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Sample analysis method by adding a sample to at least one receiving zone in this device; and (2) Kit comprising the device and a reagent.
