<p>An air conditioner and a method for operating the same are provided to close an inlet port and an outlet port when an ion generator operates, to remove a pollutant floating in a main body, thereby preventing pollution and propagation of bacteria. An air conditioner(1) has a main body(10) having an inlet port and an outlet port(12), and a heat exchanger(20) installed at the main body for exchanging heat with air drawn through the inlet port. An inlet opening and closing part and an outlet opening and closing part(50) are formed to open and close the inlet port and the outlet port. An ion generator(80) is installed in the main body for generating ion. A blower fan(30) blows air exchanging heat with the heat exchanger. If the inlet port and the outlet port are closed, a controller operates the ion generator to contact ion generation from the ion generator with the heat exchanger. When the ion generator operates, the controller operates the blower fan to circulate ion through the main body.</p> |
