Olefins, e.g. ethylene, are polymerized by the Zeigler low-pressure method in the presence of a liquid having the catalyst suspended and/or dissolved therein and under such conditions that the olefine or olefins are supplied to the liquid in the gaseous or vapour phase under a pressure which is varied during the polymerization so that a substantially constant rate of polymerization is maintained. The polymerization may be effected continuously and the catalyst may be added portionwise. The temperature of the polymerizable mix may be used as a measure of the rate of polymerization. The Zeigler low-pressure method is described. Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031 and 803,557. In the present process the catalyst is made by reacting aluminium diethylmonochloride and titanium tetrachloride and the liquid in which it is dissolved is isooctane.
