<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To allow setting of a plurality of light control operation modes for stepwise light control for controlling light in two steps, continuous light control, and illuminance correction; and to dispense with an operation mode selecting switch, relating to a discharge lamp lighting device with the identical main circuit and control circuit. <P>SOLUTION: A dimmer control circuit 4 comprises a first memory means 7 for storing in advance a light control signal data for generating a first light control signal; a second memory means 8 in which light control method data are written; and a calculation processing means 6 which reads the light control signal data stored in the first memory means 7 according to the light control method data read from the second memory means 8, and calculates and generates the first light control signal according to the selected light control signal data.
