PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rapidly calculate the angle of inclination of a surface crack with high precision at the time of ultrasonic flaw inspection. SOLUTION: The direct wave being the surface ultrasonic wave directly propagated to a detection point O along the surface of a solid from the first place En of the opening edge of the surface crack 4, is produced to be detected at the detection point O while the bypassing wave being surface ultrasonic wave, which bypasses the leading end of the crack 4 from the second place Ef opposed to the first place En of the opening edge to propagate to the detection point O, is detected at the detection point O, and at least one of a longitudinal wave mode conversion wave and a lateral wave mode conversion wave, both of which are ultrasonic waves propagated from the first and second places En and Ef and respectively converted to longitudinal and lateral waves at the leading end of the crack in mode, is detected at the detection point O. On the basis of the propagation times from the generation places En and Ef to the detection point O of the direct wave, the bypassing wave, the longitudinal wave mode conversion wave, and a lateral wave mode conversion wave to the detection point O, and of the sonic velocities of the ultrasonic waves, the angle of inclination of the surface crack 4 is provided.
