PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To correctly read information in paper sheets without causing trouble in conveyance when the paper sheets of mixed various paper qualities and thicknesses are conveyed. SOLUTION: An optical image reading apparatus 1 includes a displacement sensor 10 for detecting the thickness of a form A to be conveyed on a conveying passage; a light transmissive sensor 11 for transmitting a light quantity transmitting the form A; a plane switching mechanism section 60 having a white reference plane 65a and a black reference plane 65b as a backing plane to be used to read the form A, and capable of being switched to any of the planes; and a controller 40 for controlling the mechanism section 60, if the displacement detected by the displacement sensor 10 is smaller than a previously set first reference value and/or if the transmitting quantity of light detected by the light transmissive sensor 11 exceeds a previously set second reference value, thereby using the backing plane as the white reference plane 65a.
