The invention comprises compounds of the formula R1-S-CO-NR2R3 where R1 is C1-C5 alkyl or C2-C5 alkenyl, and R2 and R3 are alkyl of 3 or more carbon atoms, and their preparation by reacting R1SNa with R2R3N-CO-Cl. Examples show the production of compounds in which R1 is methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl, isobutyl, n-amyl and allyl, and R2 and R3 are propyl and butyl. Other products are listed in which R1 is also isopropyl or sec-butyl, and R2 and R3 are also isopropyl or isobutyl. The preparation of the sodium mercaptides is described, either by dispersing sodium in xylene with the aid of oleic acid and adding a xylene solution of the thiol, or in one case by dissolving sodium in isopropanol, adding methanethiol and distilling off the isopropanol first alone and then with xylene.ALSO:Herbicidal compositions comprise thiocarbamates of the formula R1-S-CO-NR2R3 and an inert carrier or diluent, which may be a solvent such as acetone or a dry material; R1 is C1-C5 alkyl or C2-C5 alkenyl, and R2 and R3 are alkyl of 3 or more carbon p atoms. The compositions may be applied as solutions, emulsions, dusts or granules.
