A composition which in the form of an aqueous dispersion is suitable for imparting lubricity to fibres made from polyacrylonitrile or copolymers containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile comprises (a) 20-60% by weight of a non-ionic surface-active partial ester of a polyhydric alcohol or anhydride thereof containing 2-8 carbon atoms and an aliphatic carboxylic acid which may be saturated or unsaturated and contain 10-20 carbon atoms, (b) 15-40% by weight of a non-ionic surface-active polyether prepared by condensing 150-250 moles of ethylene oxide with one mole of a water-insoluble hydroxy fatty acid or ester of such acid or mixtures of such acids and esters and (c) 10-40% by weight of a cationic surface-active quaternary ammonium compound having the formula <FORM:0990464/C4-C5/1> in which R is an alkyl or alkenyl radical having more than 10 carbon atoms and R1 is an alkyl or alkenyl radical having less than 5 carbon atoms. The composition may also contain 5-25% by weight of a substituted carbamyl compound having the formula <FORM:0990464/C4-C5/2> in which R1 and R6 are saturated alkyl radicals containing at least 6 carbon atoms, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are hydrogen or alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radicals containing less than 5 carbon atoms and in which R3 and R4 may further represent acid amide chains derived from an acid and a polyamine, D1 and D2 are oxygen, sulphur or an imide group, g is an integer of 0-3, A is oxygen, sulphur, an amino group, an alkyl substituted amino group containing less than 5 carbon atoms or an alkylol substituted amino group containing less than 5 carbon atoms, f and j are integers of 1-6, e and k are integers of 0-6, m and t are integers of 1-6, R7 and R8 are either hydrogen or methyl group, B is an alkyl or aralkyl group or the cation hydrogen of an acid and X is a halogen atom or the anion corresponding to the cationic hydrogen of B or a sulphate anion of B.ALSO:Fibres made from polyacrylonitrile or copolymers containing at least 80% by weight of acrylonitrile have imparted thereto lubricity, softness and antistatic properties by treating them with an aqueous dispersion of a composition comprising (a) 20-60% by weight of a non-ionic surface active partial ester of a polyhydric alcohol or anhydride thereof containing 2-8 carbon atoms and an aliphatic carboxylic acid which may be saturated or unsaturated and contain 10-12 carbon atoms, (b) 15-40% by weight of a non-ionic surface active polyether prepared by condensing 150-250 moles of ethylene oxide with one mole of a water-insoluble hydroxy fatty acid or ester of such acid or mixtures of such acids and esters and (c) 10-40% by weight of a cationic surface active quaternary ammonium compound having the formula <FORM:0990464/D1-D2/1> in which R is an alkyl or alkenyl radical having more than 10 carbon atoms and R1 is an alkyl or alkenyl radical having less than 5 carbon atoms. The composition may also contain 5-25% by weight of a substituted carbamyl compound having the formula <FORM:0990464/D1-D2/2> in which R1 and R6 are saturated alkyl radicals containing at least 6 carbon atoms, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are hydrogen or alkyl or hydroxyalkyl radicals containing less than 5 carbonates and in which R3 and R4 may further represent acid amide chains derived from an acid and a polyamine, D1 and D2 are oxygen, sulphur or an imide group, g is an integer of 0-3, A is oxygen, sulphur, an amino group, an alkyl substituted amine group containing less than 5 carbon atoms or an alkylol substituted amino group containing less than 5 carbon atoms, f and j are integers of 1-6, e and k are integers of 0-6, m and t are integers of 1-6, R7 and R8 are either hydrogen or methyl groups, B is an alkyl or aralkyl group or the cation hydrogen of an acid and X is a halogen atom or the anion corresponding to the cationic hydrogen of B or a sulphate anion of B. |
