An image processing apparatus and a method thereof are provided to ensure smooth portions and detailed portions including bright portions and dark portions of an image as much as possible. A target area extracting unit(10) extracts a target area from a bayer pattern image. The bayer pattern image(10) includes a target pixel and neighboring pixels. A defected pixel determining unit(20) determines if the target pixel is defected, by determining if the level of the neighboring pixel is in the range of defected pixel determining reference values changed according to the level of the target pixel. A defected pixel correcting unit(30) corrects the level of the target pixel, which is determined as a defected pixel, by using the level average of the neighboring pixels in the range of the detected pixel correcting reference values changed according to the level average of the neighboring pixels. The range of the detected pixel determining reference values is made by adding weight values according to the levels of the target pixels to the levels of the target pixels. The range of the detected pixel correcting reference values is made by adding weight values according to the level average values of the neighboring pixels.
