A biocidal composition (A), for addition to materials subject to microbial attack, comprises: (1) 2-methyl-isothiazolin-3-one (I); and (2) a second biocidal active agent (II). A biocidal composition (A), for addition to materials subject to microbial attack, comprises: (1) 2-methyl-isothiazolin-3-one (I); and (2) a second biocidal active agent (II) selected from formaldehyde, 2-bromo-2-nitro-1,3-propanediol, polyhexamethylene biguanide, o-phenylphenol, pyrithiones, N-butyl-1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one, N-hydroxymethyl-1,2-benzisothiazolin-3-one or benzyl alkonium chlorides (especially dimethyl benzalkonium chloride). An independent claim is also included for materials or mixtures preserved against harmful microorganisms by (A). - ACTIVITY : Antibacterial; Fungicide; Algicide. In tests for antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa involving incubation for 96 hours at 25[deg]C: (i) the minimum inhibitory concentration of (I) was 50 ppm in the absence of formaldehyde or 10 ppm in the presence of formaldehyde (50 ppm); and (ii) a mixture of 16.7 wt. % (I) and 83.3 wt. % formaldehyde had a synergy index of 0.67. - MECHANISM OF ACTION : None given in the source material.
