The method involves encoding a digital image according to a format comprising lower and upper definition layers by implementing a scalable video coding (SVC) standard. Bit rate and a distortion corresponding to a target definition comprised between the lower and upper definition layers are determined. Information representative of the bit rate and the distortion are associated with coding result.
